It is very important you read this if you are interested in commissioning me. If you have any questions or need any clarification, please dont hesitate to email me.
As I mentioned above, I do use AI and AI technologies during my process and will be using it during any art you may commission me for.
I use it for a variety of reasons, but the main reason is that it makes the process of creating the artwork I like Fun and enjoyable. If you have anything against the usage of these technologies in the art or creative space then my commissions/art creation process is not for you.
In my current process, AI (particularly midjourney) and the images it generates act as the building blocks for which I create a full image, so It's important for us to understand what the AI is good at generating and what it is bad at generating as this directly impacts the types of things that we can create.
AI Is good at:
Art which has one singular strong focal point such as character art or environmental art.
AI is not good at:
Images with highly complex compositions
Images which have more than one Focal point
Images which have Highly specific imagery, such as a specific tattoo, hat, or pose.
Now, this isn't to say that AI can't produce things that don't have the above qualities, but it often takes many hours of generation in order to get a base image that comes close to having the above, and in all cases those images still need heavy editing. Even then, some images/commissions that are super complex/specific may not be completely possible. This, however, is only if we account purely for what the AI is capable of doing without adding in (outside of the prompting necessary to get the appropriate images) any additional hand editing/post processing.
Even those images that are mostly successful can still have alot about them that is unnatural, incorrect, or just downright wrong. My part in this process is correcting these AI mistakes and adding in additional details through a process known as Photo-bashing (taking one element from one image and adding it to another by cutting it out and pasting it on the base image). after this photo-bashing process I go in and hand paint over any AI mistakes and blend everything together into a single cohesive image.
A Fair question to ask. If AI has so many mistakes, is rough to work with, has very decisive opinions about it, and has a hard time with certain images why use it as a medium to create artwork? Well there are a fair few reasons why actually:
AI Artwork allows me to create in a way that I personally find fulfilling and interesting. I have always enjoyed the process of photo-bashing and of editing images and this process allows me to do that whilst making something completely new.
The Artwork generated through these AI tools is often in a state were it is much easier to visualize what the final piece is going to look like, only requiring edits from a skilled hand in order to make the desired changes and finalize it. This allows the artwork to be completed in a significantly shorter time frame and definitively much faster than traditional pieces, In a matter of a week and a half (and often times much sooner) as opposed to a month or more.
Using these tools helps to keep each project affordable. Since I dont need to spend hundreds of man hours on a single piece, this allows me to price each commission extremely affordably whilst still maintaining an extremely high level of quality. In the style I tend to work in, Work like this can easily and often climb into the thousands of dollars, but through my methods I'm able to keep everything at a reasonable cost.
AI allows me to experiment with new styles and looks for art pieces in a way I couldn't ever realistically do traditionally, allowing me to complete more commissions in many more variable styles (should the commissioner be interested)
This process allows a layman to be more involved. Instead of viewing half painted or half sketched art pieces and having to guess what the final outcome is going to be like before its too late to change anything; the commissioner can view a piece in almost its full completion from the jump. This allows the commissioner to make more visually informed choices. Instead of focusing on what the actual sketch is or how rough the piece currently looks, they can actually focus on the parts that matter - pose, color, lighting, ect. - And since these pieces are nearly fully done, they can also more easily suggest edits and changes in a way that makes sense to the commissioner.
Even with AI's current limitations, its possibilities for use in creative mediums is huge and using this process I've completed all of the work that you can find currently on this website.
as stated above, The Images that my process is best suited for are :
Character portraits - (Predominantly fantasy, Sci-fi, and Horror)
Pop culture characters - (From anime to comic books)
Environments
The more complex an image or the more specific an image needs to be (outside of a popular culture context, and even in these cases sometimes) the more difficult it becomes to gather all the required pieces to make it look good. As of now, Using the current methods I use and the skill level I currently possess using AI, it is impossible for me to do the following image types:
Images which contain a massive amount of people such as Armies fighting, ECT.
Images in which there is alot of complex fighting/grappling
Now lets move on to the actual commissioning process:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Commissioning process is done in 4 key phases.
The Pre-Phase/Down payment
The Base Imaging Phase
The Drafting Phase
The Final Phase/Final Image
During this Phase you initiate the commission by emailing me and providing me with the following information:
Your Name
Your Email (Already provided by you emailing me)
We will be using this email chain to communicate about your commission. Invoices will be sent through separate emails.
Your Budget
This question is here to determine what your maximum spending allowance for the commission is, and is an important boundary to set early on.
The Base Price Point for my commissions is $200 USD
Payments for commissions are not made all at one time. Payments for the commissions are paid via mile stone - which is based upon the 4 Phases listed at the top of this section. These payments are always 1/4th of the agreed upon final price (Additional fees and addons are calculated separately during each of their respective phases)
Payments are made Via invoice which I will send at the end of a given phase of a commission. We will only continue forward to the next phase of the commission once you have paid the current invoice
All payments made during the course of the commission are (normally) non-refundable. I will refund payments on only 2 conditions.
I have made an accounting mistake and overcharged you on an invoice - in this case I will refund you the appropriate difference.
I feel that I cannot continue the commission (often due to illness/Personal matters). In this case I will refund you your full payment including the down payment
In all other cases once payment is rendered for the provided service, a refund will not be available.
Additional Fees (if any are accrued) will be added to the current phases invoice. These fee's are the following:
Base Imaging Phase: 25$ Per additional round of base images generated past the first 3 free generations (A round of generations is 3-5 images)
Drafting Phase: 25$ per additional round of editing past the first 3 free rounds of editing (a round of editing in this context is any number of edits which I preform during the drafting phase of the project.)
Final Phase: 50$ per additional round of editing during this phase.
Back tracking Fee: 150$ - If at any point during the process during the drafting phase forward if you would like to go back to the base imaging phase, it will cost the listed amount. This is due to the additional time and man hours required to go back and generate the images and restart the full process.
The Description of the image you want commissioned
A Basic description of the image that you are looking to have commissioned. this description can be as complex or as simple as you like. with images that have simple descriptions I may take more liberties when creating their images or, as will often be the case, ask for further clarifying information.
Any Reference Images you have
These images are used to help determine specific details you would like to have in the final version of your commission, such as pose, style of artwork, general color scheme, and more.
If you would like a physical copy or not
As part of this process you can choose if you would like to have a physical copy of the print at the end of the process. If you decided (YES) then there will be an additional 50$ to handle shipping, framing, and printing costs. If you decide (NO) then there will be no additional fee and all deliverables will be digital.
Once We've discussed the above details and agreed upon a final price, we then move on to the base imaging phase:
Once we've discussed the above info and you’ve paid the down payment, we begin the base imaging phase. in this phase I generate a number of base image, and you choose the one that you like the best. If you do not like any of the provided images, I will generate another batch of them - I always aim to have 5 images to show, but at minimum I will provide 3 images.
I will generate up to 3 of these batches for free (a batch is always another 3 to 5 images) upon request. any additional batches requested after the third will cost 25$ to generate.
It is important to remember that the base image, in most cases, will not include every single desired detail. these base images are here to mostly determine overall tone, composition and the general image that we will be building on top of. So, whilst an image may not contain every detail you are looking for, if you like most of it, we will collect the details for it in the coming phases.
Once you've chosen a base image that meets most of your requirements, we move on to the drafting phase.
Once you've paid for the base imaging, we move on to the drafting phase. During this phase I begin to preform a number of actions in order to gain additional parts and details needed to finalize the piece - these techniques include:
Inpainting - Using the inpainting tool in midjourney I can directly edit details on the base image in an attempt to gain important details
Additional Generations - Using the base image as a jumping off point I generate a number of additional images in order to attempt to get bits and pieces in a similar style making the blending process easier.
Once I gather these additional parts I photo-bash them on top of the base image. Once this photo-bashing and light clean-up is complete I will send you the drafted image. If you like it, we move on to the final phase. if requested I can add certain elements or change certain elements in the image.
These edits, much like the base imaging phase, are completed in batches. all edits requested at the current time are considered one batch - meaning if you request 5 edits I count it as a batch, and if you request 1 edit I count it as a batch (so request multiple edits at a time if you really feel there needs to be any edits).
Same as the base imaging phase, I will preform three of these batch edits for free (the first round of clean up and photo-bashing counts as one of your free batches). additional batches of edits after the final free edit cost an additional 25$ per batch.
once you are happy with the draft, we then move on to the final phase.
During this Phase I finalize all of the edits that have been made, fix AI mistakes and blend everything together into a single cohesive image. Once that is completed I will send you the final image and its deliverables. If at this point you request any additional batches of edits it will cost 50$ per batch requested.
Once you are happy with the image, I (as stated above) send you the deliverables. All digital deliverables will be sent through the email chain we've been using to converse. All Physical deliverables (if requested) will be sent and delivered to the delivery location provided at this time.
if you have any additional questions then please feel free to email me at thefollyworks@gmail.com
